How the law ranks wine
Quality tiers in Spain
From the broadest category at the bottom to the strictest at the top. Each appellation page shows its tier.
Denominación de Origen Calificada · 2 appellations on Vinous
Spain's highest designation under Ley 24/2003: at least ten years as a DO, all wine bottled in registered cellars inside the area, and stricter controls. Priorat uses the Catalan form DOQ.
Vino de Pago (single-estate designation) · 22 appellations on Vinous
A designation for a single estate (pago) with its own soil and microclimate, whose wines are made and bottled on the estate (Ley 24/2003).
Denominación de Origen · 68 appellations on Vinous
Protected designation of origin with a pliego de condiciones fixing area, grapes, yields and winemaking, overseen by a regulatory council.
Vino de Calidad con Indicación Geográfica · 7 appellations on Vinous
The first step of Spain's protected designations of origin (Ley 24/2003, Art. 13): wines from a named area whose quality derives from it; a VC may later become a DO.
Vino de la Tierra (IGP) · 43 appellations on Vinous
Protected geographical indication, usually a region or province; at least 85% of the grapes from the named area (EU rule).
Vino · the whole country, no named area
Wine with no geographical indication.
