How the law ranks wine
Quality tiers in Australia
From the broadest category at the bottom to the strictest at the top. Each appellation page shows its tier.
Protected Designation of Origin · 0 appellations on Vinous
All grapes from the area, with a specification fixing grapes, yields and methods.
Protected Geographical Indication · 0 appellations on Vinous
At least 85% of grapes from the named area.
Wine · the whole country, no named area
Wine with no geographical indication.
Where the numbers come from
Still to do
Still to check (2)
- Add national statistics once the appellation records exist.
- The ArcGIS layer (geography-au.yml run 2026-10-30) returned only 7 features, all gi_type Zone, all state SA -- confirmed South-Australia-only AND Zone-level-only, not Wine Australia's national register and not even South Australia's own Regions/Subregions (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra etc., despite the layer having a gi_type field for them). Worth checking whether a sibling layer on the same MapServer (.../MapServer?f=json for the full layer list) carries Region/Subregion geometry before concluding this source is a dead end. Wine Australia's own register lists every GI's name and hierarchy (~110 total) even without a boundary -- a full scrape of that register is the next useful step either way.
